Going to a dentist twice a year for your cleaning is essential. x-rays can detect potential abcesses and problems which you may not even feel yet, also plaque and calculus buildup takes about six months to start damaging the health of your teeth and gums. Excessive builup of these can cause bone loss which is non reversible and can cause loose teeth and periodontal conditions. Dentistry has advanced so much that diabetes and other immune suppression diseases can be detected in the oral cavity. Hope this answers your question, sorry its so long winded though.
