How Dental Insurance Works

Dentists have a pricelist called their Usual and Customary Fees; this pricelist is what the dentist charges to all customers for their services. If that customer has dental insurance then the dentist charges
the insurance company instead of the customer. Insurance companies have an arrangement with the dentists that they will only pay a portion of what the dentist charges; from 30% to 60%. If the dentist charges $60 for a standard check-up then they will only receive about $17 after filling out the proper form and waiting for weeks. This is why the Usual and Customary Fees are so high, because dentists know they will only receive a small portion of their asking price from the dental insurance company. If you have no dental insurance then you will pay the full price of the usual and customary fees.
Make no mistake, insurance companies are in the business of making money.
